Picture waking up in the middle of the night with pain so excruciating that it feels like someone is taking an electric drill to your back and joints. That is exactly what Dan Reynolds, the lead singer of Imagine Dragons, experienced when his Ankylosing Spondylitis, an autoimmune disease, was at its peak. This happened around the time his band was getting big and was the cause of more than one cancelled show.
“For someone who makes a living running around onstage for hours at a time, night in and night out, AS wasn’t something I could just muscle through,” states Reynolds, who has been living with AS for nearly ten years.
He told People that, after being misdiagnosed by “lots of doctors,” he saw a rheumatologist who identified the disease and put him on a proper treatment. He is presently in remission.
Now Reynolds wants to help others with AS. He has teamed up with the Spondylitis Association of America (SAA) and Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation to launch This AS Life Live!, the first interactive talk show by people with AS for people with AS. Each episode of the series will feature Reynolds interviewing a different person, focusing on a unique aspect of their daily life with AS, such as exercise, relationships, the workplace and physician visits.
Besides This AS Life Live!, the This AS Life website offers:
- Information on AS and symptom management tips
- Tips on improving doctor/patient communication
- Lifestyle management tips written by AS patients and expert rheumatologists
According to the SAA, they are the only nonprofit organization in the U.S. dedicating all of its resources to improving the lives of people with AS and related diseases.
